(SAVANNAH, GA)- After an intensive search process, The Savannah Wind Symphony Board of Directors announce the appointment of director John Madden as the Artistic Director of the Savannah Wind Symphony (SWS). Madden will begin his five-year term effective July 1, 2024.
John Madden, conductor, trumpet player, and music arranger has been a music educator since 1985. He is an Emeritus Professor of Music in the College of Music at Michigan State University where he served on the faculty for 28 years. He maintains an active performance schedule as clinician and guest conductor with both educational and professional bands. Invitations to guest conduct have taken him across the United States, Central Europe, and to Shanghai, China. In addition to his work as a conductor, John is in demand as an adjudicator, music arranger, drill designer and trumpet player. Most recently he served as the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Meridian Community Band in Okemos, Michigan.
In embarking on the search, the SWS Board of Directors had a clear vision of the qualities they were looking for in their new Artistic Director: someone deeply committed to artistic excellence, innovative programming, community engagement and music education. Equally important, the new Artistic Director will be a champion of rising artists and composers, new music and commissions, and continue the impressive work of former Music Director, Mark Johnson in the concert hall and in the community.
“The Board elected to initially limit the search to members of the ensemble who were qualified and interested. We were fortunate to have three members apply for the position. Each had their turn conducting the ensemble for one concert during the past year. While all had their strengths, John stood out as the one we felt most comfortable with. We are extremely fortunate to have a man of his talent and capability as our new leader. We are confident that we have chosen the right person to become the next Artistic Director and Conductor of the Savannah Wind Symphony,” said Bob Slagel, Vice President, SWS Board of Directors.
Madden responded:
“I am honored and pleased to be chosen to serve as the Savannah Wind Symphony’s Artistic Director and Conductor. The Savannah Winds is a beloved ensemble in our community, celebrating meaningful heritage, history and hallmarks. I look forward to collaborating with the band’s wonderful musicians, and treating our loyal audiences to the fine performances they are so accustomed to.”
